Pre-release: Tactical Implications of High Power Microwaves (HPM)
This set of meeting proceedings contains a keynote welcome speech summary and the available papers and presentation material from the SCI-119 Workshop on Tactical Implications of High Power Microwaves (HPM), held at the Svanem & #248;llens Kaserne, Copenhagen, Denmark, 11-13 June 2002. Some plenary discussions are also included. The Workshop largely covered the following issues: (a) threat to military and civilian infrastructure, (b) susceptibility of military and COTS equipment through & #8220;front door & #8221; and & #8220;back door & #8221; coupling, (c) protection, (d) propagation and pene-tration, (e) implications for military operations test and evaluation. Particular attention was given to results from tests of HPM effects on COTS computer equipment. Many types of computers were tested, and a representative collection of results were shown at the Workshop. The Workshop pro-vided clear evidence of how unprotected electronic systems located inside buildings, shelters etc. can be disturbed or damaged by HPM from rather compact and simple devices operating at modest power levels. HPM weapons of a wide range of sizes, powers, and capabilities have been under development for many years, and some of them are already available for operational use. Hence, potential attacks based on current and generally available technology must be taken into account in any scenario where malfunction of electronic systems could have fatal consequences. rto.nato.int |

Phishing E-mail To MWR Patrons Turns Out To Be Army Exercise
More than 10,000 Soldiers, civilians and Family members with military e-mail addresses received an e-mail March 30 promising free tickets to area theme parks, with a link to a Web site that appeared to belong to the Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation Command. These e-mails were sent without the knowledge or consent of the Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation Command (FMWRC) or installation MWR offices. These e-mails were "phishing" emails developed by the Army Computer Emergency Response Team (ACERT) in a Global Computer Network Defense exercise, Bulwark Defender 08 (BD08) to test the defensive posture of the Army LandWarNet. army.mil |
