NHL donates to "hockey's finest"
NEW YORK (June 7, 2010) -- The National Hockey League, UPS and the U.S. Army participated in a small ceremony at the NHL Powered by Reebok Store in New York City, where the NHL announced its generous donation of official NHL-licensed street hockey equipment to the 5th Battalion "Dragonslayers" and the 5th Air Defense Artillery Regiment -Fort Lewis, Wash.-based units currently deployed in Iraq. Their responsibilities include Counter Rocket, Artillery and Mortar mission (C-RAM), providing life-saving force protection from enemy fire. The event featured a commemorative street hockey game involving Soldiers from the New York City Recruiting Battalion, and concluded with the Soldiers, NHL and UPS representatives assisting in loading the donated equipment onto UPS trucks in preparation for shipment. Director of the Army Staff, Lt. Gen. David H. Huntoon Jr., senior Army official at the event, credited street hockey as a way deployed troops could take a break from the stresses of the combat environment. This donation marked the launch of the first NHL Street Hockey League at Camp Victory in Baghdad.
