Human Terrain Team Helps Soldiers in Iraq Understand Cultural Landscape
On a bright afternoon, Dr. Dave Matsuda traveled with a group of U.S Soldiers to tour a food distribution depot in the Ur neighborhood. The Soldiers were worried about how to keep the depot from being infiltrated by Moqtada Al Sadr’s Shi’ite militia army, which controls that part of the Iraqi Capital. The chief of security at the depot, however, assured them the warehouse was safe, because his “organization†protected it from Sadr’s influence.

Allen-Vanguard Launches CBRNE Hazard area Prediction Tool for its Remotely Operated Vehicles
Leading global security specialist Allen-Vanguard has launched ROV-Track CBRNE, a unique software application for its Defender and Vanguard%#153; bomb disposal robots which predicts and illustrates CBRNE hazard areas around a suspect device. The hazard prediction is based on data compiled by meteorological and CBRNE sensors integrated with the ROV and transmitted to the command console. Scene controllers are provided with a clear visual display of potential down-wind exposure enabling the formulation of a safe and effective response. Continual recalculation based on prevailing conditions means that controllers can make decisions based on real-time status. ROV-Track CBRNE predicts the hazard area based on relevant standards for blast effect, fragmentation and the characteristics of CBRN agents. However, these standards may be manually updated in line with the user's experience and response protocols. Defender has integral GPS and can be fitted with up to four sensors as well as a set of disruptors. The smaller, more lightweight Vanguard(TM) can carry two sensors. "ROV-Track CBRNE presents controllers with vital information in a clear, user-friendly format," says Glyn Buckler, sales director at Allen-Vanguard. "It can function as an independent incident control point management tool for first responders or communicate seamlessly with central incident control applications. The ability to modify language and maps in line with national standards make it a valuable piece of equipment for bomb squads and HAZMAT first response teams anywhere in the world."
